Beach Ultimate! (and WCBU 2014!)
Hello Ultimate Frisbee Players!
Today I am going to talk about Ultimate Frisbee again! However, this time the ultimate I am going to talk about would be on the beach instead of the usual turf and glass!
Ultimate can be played on many surfaces and Beach Ultimate offer a different and unique perspective to the usual game of Ultimate Frisbee!
Sand... all the sand on the beach!
Sand is the critical game changing factor for Beach Ultimate. (duh) On the beach, your feet sink into the sand faster than they do on grass. This results in more explosive cuts and jumps for the offence, as they can drive into the sand to utilise even more energy for their usual jumps and cuts on the turf/grass. This opens up more dynamic and speedier gameplays on the beach.
However, that being said, timings and stability of the cuts need some geting used to as sinking into the sand would result in delayed timings for your cuts. In addition, sprinting would be more energy draining as you need more energy to push off from the sand as well.
More layouts would be attempted as well as the sand cushions the layout and this eliminates some fears of a painful landing upon a layout catch/D. (it is still painful nonetheless!)
On the beach, more unorthodox throws could be attempted because of the sandy playing area! For example, a very blady disc can be throw as the receiver can layout through the sand to catch it, compared to turf where such feats are practically impossible. Another example would be short left handed throws as defenders may not be able to react and act as fast due to the sinking sand.
That being said, training on sand can actually help to improve your ultimate game on grass/turf! There are beach pickup every Saturday! Do check out their Facebook group for updates! it is usually held on Saturday afternoons around 2pm/4pm so do arrange your schedule accordingly!
On a side note, do you know that there is a world cup (or some sorts) for Beach Ultimate? It is the World Championships of Beach Ultimate (WCBU)! Here are some awesome highlights from 2011's edition!
WCBU is now in its 2015 edition, with Singapore sending her 1st team ever over to Dubai from 8 -13th March 2015!

This features Alexander Lim, one of the veteran players in Singapore and part of the Singapore team to WCBU 2015! With this kind of performance, I cannot wait to see how the Singapore team would fare!
Stay tuned as I would update the page with the scores from WCBU 2015!
