The Season of Club Tryouts is Here!
Dear Ultimate Frisbee Players!
The month of December has arrived! it also means that the end of the year is nearing with loads of events such as Christmas and Countdown 2015. It also means one other thing - the season of Ultimate Frisbee is going to happen really soon!
In order to prepare for the new season, December is also the period when Ultimate Frisbee Clubs hold tryouts to welcome new talents into the club, to boost their chances in winning the competitions ahead in 2015! Check out Ultimate Leh's Facebook page to find out more about the tryouts that are taking place during this period!
Here are some tips on how to survive the tryouts!
1) Good Fitness
Clubs are looking for players who are physcially fit as competitions, trainings demand a substantial amount of physical fitness and endurance. It is normal for clubs during a tryouts to have suicides, sprints before the skills testing. This is to see how candidates are able to fare under physicall strenuous conditions.
With that in mind, do train regularly! For more things on training up for Ultimate, do check out Ultimate Leh's Ultimate Training Series!!
2) Do your USUAL stuff!
Clubs are often looking for players that are consistent in their skills and also able to provide a bit more on top of it. Hence, it is very important never to try anything new (ie a thumber, or a huck you never did) during these tryouts! you have to execute what you do normally and it should turn out fine.
3) Bring your A++++.... Game
Be it a friend or a sibling who invited you for the tryouts, it is important is take the tryouts very seriously as when you go in, you are the representative of the club you play for. I had the unfortunate experience of going for tryouts thinking that it would be a light-hearted affair, as my friend invited me for it.
In the end, I was completely taken by surprise and did not fare well during that particular tryout. It was so bad that my friend did not even introduce me to his team mates afer the tryouts. So put in everything (.. and much more) you got for any tryout that you go!
4) Loads of Rest!
It is very important to have ample rest before the tryouts as sufficient rest would allow you to focus and make lesser mistakes on the field. In addition, no club would want a player that is late even for a tryout, let alone regular trainings!
5) Chill and Relax!
Last of all, it is important to relax during the tryouts. Anxiety give unneeded pressure and clouds your sense of judgment. This would cause you to deviate from your usual abilities and this would hurt your chances of going through tryouts!
If you do not make it past any of the club's tryouts, do not give up or feel that it is the end of the world! Clubs often are looking for a certain type of Ultimate player - speedy, consistent throws, a player who can huck... the list goes on! Hence it is important to keep on trying, you would never know that your skills would be cherished by another team!
Hope that this has helped you ease some pressure off taking part in tryouts! During this month, I would share on some of my experiences as I embark on my own journey for club tryouts, so do look out for it!
For all players going for tryouts,
ALL THE BEST!
