Common Ultimate Frisbee Terms!
Hello aspiring Ultimate Frisbee players!
while playing Ultimate Frisbee in the various places mentioned before, you might have come across the more experienced Ultimate players shouting and discussing some stuff and there are some words that you'll be like:
Never fear! Here are 11 common terms that would decypher those words that you might have come across!
Pull: A long throw to initiate the point/score.
Turnover: This occurs when someone fails to catch the disc and the disc falls to the ground. This results in a change of possession to the opposing team.
Forcing Home: Home is usually where most of your players are standing. Forcing Home would mean to defend and force the opposing player to throw towards the side where most of your players are standing. Home is usually decided before the game starts
Forcing Away: The opposing of Forcing Home, to force opposing players to throw the sides away from your team's sideline players.
Callahan (pronounced Care-ler-han): This happens when an opposing player intercepts the disc and scores simultaneously as he caught the interception in the endzone, here's a video showing a Callahan. (the opposing team is in black)
Pancake: Mhmmm, pancakes...
Not those pancakes! A pancake is a two handed catch where the player catches the disc like he/she is going to flatten the disc, like a pancake, like this!
Heads! : This is to caution nearby players that a rogue disc could potential hit any unsuspecting victims, which might end up in this gruesome state.
I'm just kidding, but getting hit by a frisbee is still pretty nasty, so keep your head protected whenever you hear this!
Break: When someone "breaks" through your defense by throwing to the area that you are forcing them not to throw to.
Poach: When someone says that he or she is poached, it means that she is without someone marking and is VERY free. Be sure to signal/shout to your players when you realise that!
Sky: This is when opposing players attempt to get the disc, which results in one player being significantly higher than the rest and getting the disc.
Up!: This is called by the sidelines when the disc leaves the opposing player, that it is now up in the air for the defense and offense to take note!
Layout: The most spectacular and exciting thing done in Ultimate Frisbee, where a players dives for the disc, putting lots of future away as s/he goes fully horizontal!
